New Delhi, Sep 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using religion as a political tool to influence people's minds and secure votes, while also criticising the demolition of a mosque inside the Saharanpur Collectorate campus in Uttar Pradesh.
About the spiritual film "Hanuman Ansh", written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Alvi alleged that films of this nature were being made as part of a broader attempt to influence people through religious sentiments and use faith for political gains.
The film chronicles the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, popularly known as Maharaj Ji.
Speaking to IANS, Alvi said: "Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power, it has brought religion into politics. Every election is fought in the name of Ram Mandir. Their faith is evident from the fact that despite the alleged embezzlement of crores of rupees, they remain silent. No one has been arrested so far."
"Now, films are being made in this manner to influence people's minds through religion and gain votes by exploiting religious sentiments," he added.
As political controversy erupted in Uttar Pradesh after a mosque located inside the Saharanpur Collectorate campus was demolished on Saturday morning, with opposition parties accusing the BJP-led state government of promoting communal politics and carrying out targeted action against a particular community ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, Alvi criticised the action and alleged that it was politically motivated.
"It is very unfortunate. Yogi Adityanath believes that by demolishing mosques, he will be able to form the government again. The BJP repeatedly talks about appeasement, but there can be no greater example of appeasement than this. If temples are demolished in Pakistan or Bangladesh, we raise our voice and say that it should not happen. Demolishing mosques only hurts the Muslims of this nation," the Congress leader said.
The demolition followed a legal dispute over the status of the structure and the land on which it stood. A district court had dismissed an appeal against an earlier order holding that the structure had been built on government land and was unauthorised.
The September 2 order itself did not specifically mention demolition. Instead, it dismissed the appeal and upheld an earlier order passed by a magistrate on July 16.
The July 16 order had directed the eviction of the mosque under the Uttar Pradesh Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1972, after concluding that the structure occupied 315 square metres of government land.
Alvi questioned the legal basis for the demolition and also raised concerns over the applicability and interpretation of the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
"This is the decision of a district judge. Parliament has already passed the Places of Worship Act, but the Supreme Court is neither clarifying nor defining the law. Despite this law, a district judge has allowed the demolition, declaring the structure illegal. Where will people find documents dating back 100 years? Are documents available for every temple built in India? Yogi Adityanath should produce those documents. This is a one-sided decision," he said.
